My Story

About ten years ago, I was just a regular, middle-class Joe, managing a restaurant full time with not much time left over to pursue my dream of starting my own financial consulting firm.

In just a handful of years, I had gone from being a single guy with a relatively simple life to juggling a wife, two kids, and all the other stuff that goes with having a family—a new mortgage, two car loans, and a stack of serious credit card bills. Those monthly debt payments swallowed every bit of my income.

I’d done my homework and pretty much knew how to choose good investments. I even had a small investment portfolio. But I always lacked leverage, that big green leverage thing that is necessary for making any significant money. As the saying goes, “You’ve got to have money to make money.” Fees, commissions and inflation always ate up the small returns that I did manage to get.

The best investment I had going was my 401k account at work, and that was only because the money was taken out of my check before I could touch it. Otherwise, those funds would have disappeared along with the rest of my discretionary income.

Working harder at the restaurant in order to scrape together enough to start my own consulting business sure wasn’t working. People would ask me, “Whatever happened to your starting your own business, and seeing the world, George?” My dreams were gathering dust, just like that set of golf clubs that I never had time to use.

What did I have to show for all my hard work?

A mountain of debt. Fewer assets and more liabilities every month. And those tense talks with my wife about money sure didn’t help. We’d often get into it almost as soon as we’d put the kids to bed. We wanted to be able to buy them cars, and nice clothes, and be able to put them through college one day, but we could barely even manage the expenses and debt payments that we already had. Where was the extra money going to come from?

“There has to be a better way,” I would think to myself. But I sure wasn’t finding it.

Then, one day, I received a letter.

My Epiphany

My answer came in the form of a letter in my mailbox. The headline of the letter said:

“People Are Lying to You and It’s Costing You a Fortune!

The letter went on to say that the interest rates most people paid on their debts would absolutely keep them from ever achieving a successful retirement. But, if they would only pay off their debts first, then they would have a significant amount of money for investing. This concept hit me like a hammer!

I got out a pencil, calculator and legal pad, and I started crunching the numbers the letter talked about. I read that letter three or four more times, just to make sure it was legitimate.

I didn’t understand everything at first, but I slowly began to see that…

Instead of trying to earn the markets’ unreliable returns, I could use the system to pay off my debts with a guaranteed return that would be much, much higher than any other investment available to me. I could actually turn every one of my debts into real wealth!

As I looked into this further, I got more and more excited.
